What do you think of when you first hear the word "entrepreneur"? Perhaps you envision a businessman- dressed in a dark suit, carrying a briefcase everywhere he goes. Perhaps, you see a couple of hipster college students starting up a new e-commerce business. Perhaps, you may think of a mommy blogger that travels the world with with her husband and 7 kids, all well-groomed and smiling and playing kindly with each other in every picture.
Whatever you imagine an entrepreneur to be, you're probably correct. See, in reality, we are all entrepreneurs.
Yes, we are all entrepreneurs.
Let's think about what an entrepreneur is, shall we? An entrepreneur has an idea. They usually have a passion for something that is so intense that they create a business from it.
Before we move on, we should define the term "business". The Oxford Dictionary describes it as "a person's regular occupation, profession, or trade".
Note that the Oxford Dictionary did not describe a business as a bunch of investment firms located in densely populated cities. Nor did it describe a business using words like "real estate", "banking", or "9-5-job-in-a-concrete-building-with-a-bland-cubicle-as-your-only-view-for-the-entire-day". It simply put it as "a person's regular occupation, profession, or trade."
Do we all have a regular occupation, profession, or trade? (the answer is "yes")
YES! We do!
The shoe shiner on the street has a trade of shining shoes! (Who would have thought?!)
The ballerina performing with the American Chamber Ballet dances for a profession!
The shift manager's occupation at your local Wal-Mart is, well, to manage the shifts they work on.
"So? What do these jobs have to do with entrepreneurship?"
These three people had a brand for their business (brand: themselves/ business: the job they're working at). Whether we intend to, or not, we are always creating our own brand for ourselves and looking at the other brands around us. We see others and invest in their brands (creating friendships, hiring employees, etc.). We go to interviews for potential schools, jobs, and internships to show off our brand, and to explain why our brand is worth investing into. We are our own entrepreneurs for our own businesses. Now the question is, are we actively building our own business, or are we letting others build it for us?
